If I am shooting a bear or caribou out on the landscape and they are too far, I would hope to crop. These are brighter lenses not longer lens situations. I understand the appeal of more reach but it doesn't work if the lens isn't bright enough and Auntie is saying 50-200 feet. I can always add a TC but I can't remove one if the lens is already f/5.6-f/6.3 without one. I can always crop but I can't make a lens brighter. Those are going to be the best lens combination for the best lighting opportunities. If I were up there I'd plan my trip to be on the move when the sun is high in the sky and behind the camera in early morning and early evening. If I know for sure I'm going to have bright sun I'd lean more toward the 100-400 than I am the OMS especially because it can use a TC, but I can't make bright sun before sunrise and after dusk - the best time for photography in AK where you have some of the most world's most beautiful and awesome landscapes and lighting. This is where I would trade reach for the ability to shoot a brighter lens so I can use the camera over a broader range of lighting conditions. Some time on the trip, there will be no next weekend. If you are home you can say - next weekend. Yes, but you can't take any photos at f/2.8 with the 100-400 so if you find yourself in gloom or before dawn or after dusk you will wish you had the f/2.8 lens.īefore dawn and at dusk are when you find the best light and the most beautiful images are made. Hi All this is the continuation of the highly educational and fun discussion we were all having.
